The Weeping Icon of Klokochovo, Oldest of the Ruthenian Marian Shrines

The Ruthenian people have always had a great devotion to Our Blessed Theotokos to whom they turn in times of trouble. There are several miraculous icons of Our Lady that have shed tears during difficult times in Ruthenian history. The oldest of these icons is Our Lady of Klokochovo who is venerated as the "Refuge of
Christians". In 1670, Calvinist "crusaders" attacked the church of Klokochovo, a small Carpathian village which is now in Eastern Slovakia. At that time Protestant Hungarian aristocrats attempted to free their country from the Catholic Habsburg rule with the support of the Turks. A group of Protestant soldiers attacked the village of Klokochovo and the people fled into the church where the icon of Our Lady began to shed tears.
Byzantine Seminary Press has published a set of booklets about Ruthenian Miraculous Icons including the Weeping Icon of Klokochovo. They are only 50 cents each, a great resource for studying our Ruthenian spiritual history. Check St. George's gift shop!
Our Lady of Klokochovo, pray for us!
