Welcome! Glory To Jesus Christ!
The Shrine of Our Lady Of Perpetual Help, Olympia, Washington, is the eparchial shrine of the Byzantine Catholic Eparchy of Phoenix which serves Byzantine Catholics in the Western United States.
An ancient Carpatho-Rusyn traditon, the annual pilgrimage at the shrine takes place in August in honor of the feast of the Dormition ( Assumption) of the Mother of God. Exact dates vary from year to year. They are displayed in the header above as soon as they become available.
The three terms apply to the same group of people here in the US. Carpatho- Rusyns who immigrated to the US received the anglofied name Ruthenians. Their church, the Ruthenian Catholic Church is called the Byzantine Catholic Church in the US only.
Saint George Byzantine Catholic Church
The Shrine of Our Lady Of Perpetual Help is hosted by Saint George, the Great Martyr, Byzantine Catholic Church.
What Are Byzantine Catholics?
Byzantine Catholics are in communion with our Holy Father Francis, Pope of Rome. However, we worship in the ancient Byzantine liturgical tradition which is descended from Constantinople rather than Rome.
The story of the miraculous icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help is long and eventful. It involves a journey from the Mediterranean island of Crete to Rome where Our Lady experienced periods of much public veneration alternating with a long period of oblivion. Copies of the original icon were spread all over the world. Our shrine contains one of them. This site talks about the original icon and also about the mosaic in our shrine.
